Your Child’s First Saturday School Day: A Calm Family Guide

Starting Saturday school is a meaningful step, but new rooms, people, routines, and language expectations may feel unfamiliar. Preparation is most helpful when it gives a child a clear picture of what will happen without creating pressure to feel cheerful or confident immediately.

## Describe the day simply

Explain the basic sequence using confirmed school information: how arrival works, who will greet the child, what the general learning time looks like, and when the family returns. If a detail is unknown, tell your child you will ask rather than guessing.

## Practice the arrival

At home, briefly rehearse saying hello, giving a name, putting away belongings, and asking for help. Children do not need to perform perfectly. The purpose is to make a few useful words and actions feel familiar.

## Prepare one comfort strategy

Agree on a small strategy the child can use when nervous: take three slow breaths, hold a permitted comfort item, look for the teacher, or use a prepared phrase such as “Can you help me?” Confirm school rules before sending personal items.

## Keep the goodbye clear and warm

Long, uncertain goodbyes can make separation harder. Use a calm sentence that explains when you will return, follow the school’s check-in process, and keep your promise. If your child needs additional support, discuss it privately with the appropriate staff member.

## Ask open questions afterward

Instead of “Did you like it?” try “What did you notice?” “What was easier than you expected?” or “Was anything confusing?” A neutral question gives children room to describe both positive and difficult moments.

## One action before the first day

Write down your family’s three most important questions and send them to [email protected].

Children adjust at different speeds. A quiet first day does not mean the experience was unsuccessful, and immediate enthusiasm is not the only sign of belonging. At Russian School, we want each family to feel informed, welcomed, and supported as a new school year begins.
